On opening the shoebox, my first impression was that the Merrell Zion GTXs didn’t really look like hiking shoes. The midsole is made of EVA foam for ‘stability and comfort’, while EVA foam pods are also located in the rearfoot and forefoot for extra cushioning. TPU material for optimal stiffness at one end of the plate and maximum flexibility at the other end.

The leather and mesh upper make for a nice finish – water was kept well away, and my feet never felt too hot or stifled.

Despite the wide fit the Zion does a good job of holding the ankle in place without heel slip so for everyday walking these are blister free boots. For the record, the same is true for all the membranes and boots we’ve tested, so the advantage of skipping the Gore-Tex label comes in the savings.
